Do I really need a birth plan?

We get this question… A LOT. Here are a few proven benefits of birth plans:

· Creating a birth plan gives you a chance to research and decide how you feel about different labor, birth, and newborn options ahead of time. This is one of the most important events you’ll have in life, making a birth plan is just as much about the process as it is about the finished piece of paper!

· Birth Plans facilitate clear communication. With a birth plan your wishes for labor, birth and the care of your newborn are directly and explicitly communicated to your healthcare team, your birth support and/or your partner.

· You stay in control of your birth. Things may not go 100% according to plan (this is totally normal!) and while things may evolve throughout labor, it’s important that you are ready for any changes in order to stay in control and have the birth you want. With your birth wishes directly and clearly communicated on paper, any modifications to those wishes require your informed consent to be changed.

· Making a birth plan will empower you. By taking the time to learn about your options during labor and birth, you build self-confidence. If something unexpected or unplanned occurs you won’t be caught off guard and you can stay calm (remember, keeping adrenaline at bay is good during labor!). You will be prepared and familiar with the options available to you and able to move forward confidently.

· Discussing your birth plan with your midwives or gynecologist ahead of time keep you on the same page. We have a midwife appointment dedicated to talking all things birth plans! Bring your partially filled-in (or completely filled-in) birth plan and go over your wishes to make sure you are both on the same page.

· During labor, you can focus on the task at hand. It can be challenging to make decisions or take in all the options on the spot when you are in labor! You may not even feeling like talking much during labor. With a birth plan you’ll be free from the worries and anxiety of having to make ALL your decisions in the middle of labor and needing to communicate those choices to your partner, birth support, and healthcare providers. Your birth plan does that for you!

· Show your healthcare providers that you are on the same team. It’s a relief for healthcare providers to know you are making informed decisions and your birth wishes are based on your prenatal education. By you being informed, it enables them to discuss any unforeseen circumstances and options with you confidently, in detail, and help you achieve the birth you would like.
